Phase control of excitable systems

چکیده
Here we study how to control the dynamics of excitable systems by using the phase control technique. Excitable systems are relevant in neuronal dynamics and therefore this method might have important applications. We use the periodically driven FitzHugh–Nagumo (FHN) model, which displays both spiking and non-spiking behaviours in chaotic or periodic regimes. The phase control technique consists of applying a harmonic perturbation with a suitable phase φ that we adjust in search of different behaviours of the FHN dynamics. We compare our numerical results with experimental measurements performed on an electronic circuit and find good agreement between them. This method might be useful for a better understanding of excitable systems and different phenomena in neuronal dynamics.

Extending Phase Reduction to Excitable Media: Theory and Applications
Phase reduction methods have been tremendously useful for understanding the dynamics of nonlinear oscillators, but have been difficult to extend to systems with a stable fixed point, such as an excitable system. Using the notion of isostables, which measure the time it takes for a given initial condition in phase space to approach a stable fixed point, we present a general method for isostable ...
متن کاملPhase Locking and Resonances for Stochastic Excitable Systems
We investigate the phase locking of firing events in periodically forced stochastic excitable systems. Our study is motivated by the observation of randomly phase locked firing activity in a large number of neurons, especially those involved in transducing physical stimuli such as temperature, sound, pressure and electric fields. The purpose of our paper is to review our work on the biophysical...
متن کاملSynchronization in Periodically Driven and Coupled Stochastic Systems--A Discrete State Approach
We investigate the behavior of stochastic bistable and excitable dynamics based on a discrete state modeling. In addition to the well known Markovian two state model for bistable dynamics we introduce a non Markovian three state model for excitable systems. Its relative simplicity compared to stochastic models of excitable dynamics with continuous phase space allows to obtain analytical results...
متن کاملAn Energy-Optimal Methodology for Synchronization of Excitable Media
We propose a novel energy-optimal methodology to synchronize the cells within an excitable medium during spiral wave activity. The optimal stimulus takes the cells of an excitable medium to a target set where the isostables of the system, which measure the time it takes for a given initial condition in phase space to approach a stable fixed point, are diffuse, thereby synchronizing the activity...
متن کاملControl of Spatiotemporal Disorder in an Excitable Medium
We consider partial differential equations that describe excitable media (phase variables: activator u and inhibitor v) and their disordered solutions consisting of erratically moving wave pieces. A pulse of a control parameter that displaces the u-nullcline parallely to the v-axis can split a wave into two waves moving in opposite directions. A properly applied train of such pulses completely ...
